What does your home say about you? Making a house a home is a labor of love and self-expression. Whether your style is mid-century modern, minimalist, traditional or something else, the way you decorate and the brands you buy reveal much about who you are. In an ever-growing trend, people are more conscious of the ethos behind the brands they choose. This means homes are increasingly becoming a statement of values and priorities, like eco-friendly and ethically made. To discover more about how this trend is evolving and what it’s like from a business perspective, we sat down with Natalya Bondole, CEO of LOOMLAN, offering sustainable furniture and home décor.
People are intrigued by the way your company focuses on furniture that has a positive impact on the environment. Tell us about that.
At LOOMLAN, we believe that furnishing a home shouldn’t come at the cost of our planet’s health. While we’re not manufacturers ourselves, we carefully curate our selection to include brands that prioritize sustainability and environmental responsibility. Our unique approach ties each order directly to tangible environmental actions. For instance, a single order can result in planting 10 trees, providing a home for two koalas. We support various global initiatives, including UN-led Climate Change Projects to offset CO2, the Earth Lungs project planting trees in Africa, and Plastic Bank’s efforts to rescue plastic from our oceans. This way, our customers don’t just buy furniture; they contribute to a greener future with every purchase.
How have you seen your environmentally friendly approach to the furniture business received by clients?
Over our four years in operation, we’ve witnessed a growing enthusiasm from our clients for our environmentally conscious approach. Many customers express appreciation for the opportunity to make their home beautiful while simultaneously supporting crucial environmental causes. We’ve noticed an increasing number of clients specifically seeking out furniture options that align with their values. The tangible nature of our contributions – like knowing exactly how many trees are planted with each order – resonates strongly with our customers. They feel empowered, knowing that their purchase has a direct, positive impact on the environment. This positive reception has reinforced our commitment to our eco-friendly business model and encouraged us to continually expand our sustainable offerings.
Do you think customers find it more as a nice bonus that it’s environmentally friendly and socially conscious, or is it the reason why someone ultimately chooses a company like yours?
In our experience, it’s a combination of both. Many customers initially come to LOOMLAN looking for quality furniture for their homes. The environmental aspect often starts as a pleasant surprise – a “nice bonus” as you put it. However, once they understand the depth of our commitment and the tangible impact of their purchase, it frequently becomes a deciding factor. We’ve had numerous instances where customers chose us over competitors specifically because of our environmental initiatives. That said, we recognize that quality, design, and price remain crucial factors. Our success lies in offering products that meet these traditional criteria while also satisfying the growing desire for environmentally responsible consumption. Increasingly, we’re seeing the environmental aspect shift from a bonus to a primary consideration for many of our customers.
Do you see the trend of companies working to be more environmentally friendly, growing or changing in any way?
Absolutely, the trend towards environmental responsibility in business is not just growing – it’s evolving rapidly. We’re seeing a shift from superficial “green washing” to more substantial, measurable commitments. Companies across industries are integrating sustainability into their core business models rather than treating it as an afterthought. In the furniture sector specifically, we’re noticing increased focus on sustainable materials, ethical manufacturing processes, and circular economy principles. There’s also a growing emphasis on transparency, with companies being more open about their environmental impact and mitigation efforts. At LOOMLAN, we’re continually adapting to these changes, always looking for new ways to enhance our positive environmental impact while meeting our customers’ needs for quality home furnishings.
What do you think the future is for businesses that are trying to have a smaller net carbon footprint or companies that are trying to be more socially conscious?
From our interactions with our partner brands, we understand that adopting environmentally friendly practices can initially increase costs and complexity. This might involve sourcing sustainable materials, implementing cleaner production processes, or investing in carbon offset programs. Ultimately, many of our partners report that these investments often lead to long-term benefits, including improved efficiency, positive brand perception, and customer loyalty. Looking to the future, we believe that businesses prioritizing sustainability and social consciousness will have a significant advantage.
What are some of the benefits worldwide of the socially conscious, ethically made programs your products support?
As a brand, we proudly source ethical international style furniture and are involved in several causes that directly or indirectly support women and children across the globe. One such example of our ethically made products are our rugs associated with the CARE & FAIR worldwide industry initiative. This program helps to fight illegal child labor and improve the living conditions of carpet knotters and their families in India, Nepal, and Pakistan. In addition, the Women Empowerment Program is actively supported by CARE & FAIR. Under this program, mothers and older sisters of school children attending some of the CARE & FAIR schools have had the opportunity to learn reading math and writing skills since 2002.
